You glance at your open case, the GPU fans are dead still, and the internet immediately splits into two camps: your card is failing, RMA it — or it’s fine, that’s normal, ignore it. Both are sometimes right, and that’s exactly the problem. “GPU fans not spinning” describes three completely different situations, and the fix — or the relief — depends entirely on which one you actually have.

The good news is that for most people asking this question, nothing is wrong. Modern graphics cards stop their fans on purpose. The trick is knowing how to tell that normal, healthy silence apart from a genuinely dead fan, and to spot the one case where fans-not-spinning isn’t a fan issue at all.

Step 1: Idle or under load? This one check sorts everything

Before you touch a screwdriver, answer a single question: are the fans off because the card is cool, or off despite the card being hot?

Since about 2016, nearly every mid-range and higher graphics card ships with a zero-RPM idle feature. You’ll see it under a different brand name depending on who made your card:

Step 2: Fans stay off under load — the real fixes, in order

If the card is genuinely hot and the fans refuse to spin, work these from easiest to hardest. Roughly this is also their hit-rate order.

1. Override the fan curve in software. Open MSI Afterburner (it works on any brand), enable manual fan control, and set a fixed 60-70% speed. If the fans jump to life on command, the hardware is fine and the problem was a stuck auto curve, a disabled setting, or a software conflict — set a sensible custom curve with a low floor and you’re done. If they don’t respond to a direct manual command, the issue is physical; keep going.

2. Re-seat the fan power cable. On most cards the fan assembly connects to the PCB through a small internal header, and it can work loose — especially after shipping, a move, or a recent reinstall. Power down, pull the card, and check that little fan connector is fully clicked in. Put simply: fans-off is only an emergency when the card is hot. A GPU that idles silent and spins up under load is one of the best-behaved things in your PC. A GPU that bakes past 80 °C while its fans sit dead will throttle, then crash, then eventually protect itself with a thermal shutdown — and running it that way repeatedly shortens its life. If you’ve confirmed a genuinely dead fan, don’t game on the card until it’s fixed; low-load desktop use is fine while you wait on a replacement.
