Search “how often to replace thermal paste” and the top results openly contradict each other. A well-ranked guide tells you every 2 to 3 years. Corsair’s own page says paste “will typically last many, many years and the vast majority of users should never have to worry about it.” A veteran on the Linus Tech Tips forum swears by at least once a year. On r/buildapc, the single most-upvoted answer to this exact question is four words: “When your temps give you trouble.”
They’re not wrong — they’re answering slightly different questions and pretending it’s one answer. The useful version of this question isn’t “what’s the magic interval.” It’s “what actually tells me my paste needs replacing” — and the answer is a temperature, not a date.
The honest answer: repaste on a number, not a schedule
Here’s the thing the calendar-based advice skips. Thermal paste doesn’t degrade on a fixed timer like milk. It degrades based on how hot it runs and how many heat cycles it goes through — which is why a lightly-used office PC and a gaming laptop that throttles every night age their paste at completely different rates.
