You press the power button and nothing happens — no fans, no lights, no sound — and the obvious conclusion is that the button is broken. It usually isn’t. On a desktop, “power button not working” is one of the most mis-diagnosed faults there is, because the same dead-press symptom is produced by a loose wire, a flipped PSU switch, stuck residual power, or a failing power supply just as often as by an actually-broken button. Swap the button (or the whole case) on that assumption and half the time the machine is still dead.
So the real first move isn’t “how do I replace the power button” — it’s “is it even the button?” There’s a single test that answers that in about a minute, before you spend a dollar or order a part. Let’s get to it in the right order.
First: totally dead, or partly alive?
Look at the machine when you press power and sort it into one of three buckets — this decides everything that follows:
- Nothing at all. No fans twitch, no LEDs, no motherboard debug light, no sound. This is a power-on-path problem — the button, its wire, the PSU switch/cable, flea power, or a dead PSU. That’s what this guide is for.

The rest of this walkthrough is about the first bucket: you press power and the PC is stone dead.
Step 1: the 60-second differential
Before touching anything, use the pattern of the symptom to rank the suspects. These are the tells that separate a button problem from everything it gets blamed for:

Notice how few of these rows are actually “the button.” That’s the whole point — and the next three steps walk the ladder from free-and-likely to conclusive.
Step 2: rule out power delivery (free, do this first)
Most “dead button” calls are solved here without opening anything meaningful:
- Check the PSU’s rear switch. The rocker on the back of the power supply has a

- Drain the flea power. Residual charge can leave the board in a stuck, unresponsive state. Turn off the PSU switch, unplug the power cable from the wall, then hold the case power button down for 30 seconds to bleed the remaining charge out of the capacitors. Plug back in, flip the PSU switch to

If the machine springs back to life after any of these, the button was never broken — you had a power-delivery hiccup. If it’s still dead, it’s time for the test that actually settles the button question.
Step 3: the conclusive test — jump the header pins
This is the single most useful step, because it tells you definitively whether the button is at fault. The case’s power button does exactly one thing: it briefly connects two pins on the motherboard’s front-panel header. You can do that connection yourself.
Read this before you do it: this is the one step in the guide performed on a live board, so touch only the two PWR_SW pins, briefly, and be careful not to slip onto neighboring pins — a screwdriver dragged across the front-panel header or the board can short something you did not intend. Keep your hands clear of the CPU and GPU power connectors. If you are not confident identifying the pins, check the manual’s front-panel diagram first rather than guessing.
- Leave the PC plugged in and the PSU switch on (
|). - Remove the side panel.
- Find the front-panel header — a small cluster of pins, usually in the lower-right corner of the board. Two of them are labeled PWR_SW (or PWR / PW / Power SW). Your motherboard manual shows the exact layout; the two power-switch pins are what you want.
- Briefly touch those two PWR_SW pins together with the tip of a flathead screwdriver — a quick tap, metal across both pins at once.
What the result tells you:
- The PC powers up. The motherboard, PSU, and all power delivery are working. The fault is the physical button or the thin wire running from it to the header — the cheapest, easiest failure on the whole list. Go to Step 4.
- Still nothing — no fans, no lights, no spin-up. The button is now ruled out. The problem is behind it: a PSU that’s failed, a dislodged 24-pin or 8-pin CPU power cable, or a motherboard fault. Skip to “when it isn’t the button.”
Intel documents this screwdriver method explicitly — lightly touching the two power-switch header pins turns the system on if everything behind them is connected correctly, doing the same job as the case button. It’s a standard bench move, not a hack.
Step 4: the free permanent fix — steal the reset switch
If the jump test booted the PC, you’ve confirmed the button/wire is dead — but you don’t necessarily need to buy anything. The reset switch is electrically identical to the power switch: both are momentary buttons that briefly short two header pins. So you can promote the reset button to power duty:
- Power down and unplug.
- At the front-panel header, disconnect the small two-pin RESET_SW cable and the PWR_SW cable.
- Plug the Reset cable onto the pins the Power cable was using (the PWR_SW pins).
- Reassemble. Now the case’s reset button turns the PC on.
You give up the reset function — rarely missed — and gain a working power control for free. If you’d rather have a proper button back, a replacement PC power/reset switch is a couple of dollars and plugs straight onto the same pins.
If the button feels stuck or gritty
When the button physically sticks — stays depressed, feels mushy, or needs a hard jab — the switch mechanism is fouled or worn, not electrically dead. With the PC off and unplugged, blast compressed air around the gap of the button to clear dust or debris, and work it a few times. If it still sticks, the spring or switch is done — swap to the reset button as above, or replace the switch.
When it isn’t the button
If shorting the PWR_SW pins produced nothing at all, the button is cleared and the fault is deeper in the power chain. Work these in order:
- Reseat the main power cables. With the PC unplugged, firmly re-seat the 24-pin motherboard connector and the 8-pin (4+4) CPU power connector at the top of the board. A partially-seated CPU power cable is a classic “totally dead, no response” cause after a build or a component swap.
- Suspect the power supply. A PSU that’s died — or whose rear switch/cable is bad — gives you exactly this no-response-at-all symptom.
