Twelve RTX 5090 prebuilts were surveyed for the September buying guide, and one thing about them would not go away: not one said which cable fed the card. Twelve listings is an observation. It is not a finding.

So this page checks all of them.

The result is more specific than the original observation, and in one respect it is the opposite of what “power supply problem” usually means.

The wattage is fine. That is the surprise.

Seventy-five of the 82 listings state a power-supply wattage. Every single one of those 75 meets or exceeds the 1000W system power NVIDIA specifies for the RTX 5090. The stated figures run 1000W to 1300W, median 1000W. Not one comes in under.

This is worth saying plainly because the reflex in this category is to assume the builder skimped on the supply. In this sample, on this measure, they did not.

The disclosure does not taper off. It falls off a cliff, and it falls off exactly where this generation of card has had trouble.

Why the cable is the field that matters

The RTX 5090 draws 575W of total graphics power through a 12V-2x6 connector — the revised 16-pin design introduced with ATX 3.0 and tightened in ATX 3.1. The wattage headline and the connector are different questions, and only one of them is answered on these pages.

A 1000W supply can be an older unit with an adapter, or a current ATX 3.1 unit with a native 12V-2x6 cable. Both satisfy the number in the specification table. They are not the same purchase. Six percent of these listings tell you which one you are getting.

That is the finding. Not that these machines are underpowered — they are not — but that the single field most worth knowing at this price is the one field nobody fills in.

Eight of the 82 listings, priced from $5,783 to $6,989, pair the RTX 5090 with a DDR4 platform on the Ryzen 9 5900X. That processor launched in 2020.

Nothing here is broken and these machines will run games well. But at $6,989 you are buying a 2026 flagship graphics card bolted to a six-year-old memory generation on a socket with no upgrade path left. If you take one habit from this page, take this one: on a prebuilt, read the memory type before you read the graphics card. The GPU is in the title. The platform generation usually is not.

Which listings disclosed the most

Seven listings state both an efficiency rating and an ATX 3.x revision, or state a rating alongside a supply of 1200W or more. They are not necessarily the best machines. They are the ones that told you the most before you paid.

What to ask before you pay

The listings will not tell you, so ask the seller. Four questions, in order of how much they cost you to get wrong:

  1. Is the power supply ATX 3.0 or ATX 3.1? This determines whether it was designed around the 12V-2x6 connector and the transient behaviour of this card class.
  2. Is the GPU cable native, or an adapter? A native cable from an ATX 3.x supply is the configuration the card was specified against.
  3. What is the efficiency rating? Four fifths of these listings do not say. At 575W sustained from the card alone, it is not a trivial line.
  4. What memory generation is the platform? Eight machines here answer this badly and none of them say so in the title.

If a seller will not answer 1 and 2 in writing, that is information too.

This is a census of what the listings say, not of what is inside the machines. Several of these builders may well ship native ATX 3.1 cables — the point is that you cannot tell before you pay, and at $6,000 you should be able to. Nothing here says any of these systems is unsafe.
