Keep your PS5 or Xbox Series X/S if you already own one. For a new purchase, choose the platform whose other games and complete cost suit you. PS5 Pro is a deliberate premium choice; its GTA 6 Enhanced listing does not establish a specific frame rate. Compare the complete purchase before choosing a console.

Keep your PS5 or Xbox Series X/S. GTA 6 is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on those platforms, according to Rockstar’s official game page. A launch date is a reason to clear space in your calendar, but replacing a working supported console needs a better reason than the approaching release.
Buying your first console takes more thought. Start with the library you want beyond GTA 6, then compare the complete purchase. A PS5 Pro belongs on the shortlist when premium hardware is a deliberate choice and the extra cost leaves room for the games you intend to play.
Choose the console around your situation
| Your situation | Start here |
|---|---|
| Own a PS5, PS5 Pro or Series X/S | Keep it until an actual problem justifies replacement. |
| Want PlayStation games | PS5. Compare your game list, disc needs and total cost. |
| Want premium PlayStation hardware | PS5 Pro, if its wider benefits justify the extra cost. |
| Want Xbox disc games | A disc-equipped Series X. Verify the exact model. |
| Buy Xbox games digitally | Compare Series S and digital Series X, including storage costs. |
Microsoft lists both disc-equipped and all-digital Series X models, while its Series S models are all-digital. Check the full product name; “Series X” alone does not settle the disc question. Xbox console comparison.
GTA 6 itself does not create a reason to buy an optical drive: Rockstar says its announced boxed version contains a download code and no disc. Choose a drive for other games you want on disc. Rockstar’s editions FAQ.
PS5 versus PS5 Pro
The regular PS5 is the natural starting point for a new PlayStation buyer focused on GTA 6. Sony lists the game for PS5 and marks it PS5 Pro Enhanced. Its page also describes DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive-trigger support. Those controller features are a concrete reason to prefer PlayStation if they appeal to you. Sony’s GTA 6 page.
The Pro decision needs a higher bar.
An Enhanced badge establishes support for the premium console. It does not tell you which frame rate GTA 6 will hold, how its modes compare or whether a particular difference will be obvious from your sofa. The cited game listing supplies no numerical performance target. A promised 60 fps needs evidence.
Sony specifies a built-in 2TB SSD for PS5 Pro and describes enhancements that depend on the supported game. PS5 Pro specifications. Extra capacity is a tangible part of the comparison; a guessed GTA 6 benchmark is not.
The test for the upgrade is simple: would you still want this console if the GTA 6 improvement were smaller than you hoped? If you want Pro for other games as well, have budgeted for those games, and would be satisfied even if GTA 6 offers a modest improvement on your particular screen, the purchase makes sense on its own terms. Otherwise, wait. An existing PS5 owner has even less reason to rush; put the replacement cost beside the games or display improvement that same money could buy.
Keep that money until the upgrade solves a problem.
Series X versus Series S
Series S is included in Rockstar’s supported platform list. It deserves consideration when its complete cost fits your budget and you are comfortable buying digitally. Support alone does not establish equal image quality or performance across the Xbox models. Rockstar’s platform list.
For an Xbox buyer with other games on disc, start with a disc-equipped Series X. Those discs settle the drive question. Digital buyers should compare actual offers and storage capacities.
How much must stay installed? Someone planning to play GTA 6 and one other game has a different buying problem from a household where several people expect their favorites to be ready whenever they pick up a controller. List those games before adding expansion storage. Our GTA 6 storage guide separates the installation question from the decision to buy another drive.
Do not buy Series S as a temporary step if you already know you want a different console. Buying twice needs a stronger justification than impatience.
Work out the complete purchase
Compare two finalists at a time using the same basket. Write their exact model names above columns A and B. Enter current checkout amounts in your currency; leave a row at zero when you do not need the item.
| Cost to enter | A | B |
|---|---|---|
| Console, tax and delivery | ___ | ___ |
| Your GTA 6 edition | ___ | ___ |
| Other games | ___ | ___ |
| Needed drive or accessories | ___ | ___ |
| Needed storage | ___ | ___ |
| Complete purchase | ___ | ___ |
Count a subscription only when you independently want its contents. Do not assign a bundle’s advertised subscription value to money you would never otherwise spend, or treat an unwanted accessory as a saving just because the box puts a separate price beside it. Leave it out. Likewise, a trade-in belongs in a separate row until you have an actual offer for your console’s condition. Complete this worksheet before choosing an edition or clicking an accessory recommendation. The cheapest console becomes less appealing if buying the other things you need would take the basket above your limit.
Check the disc drive and screen before checkout
If your other games need discs, check the drive on the exact console being ordered. Sony specifies compatibility with the CFI-2000/7000 model groups for its detachable PS5 drive and requires internet access to pair it during setup. Check the model number. An older used Digital Edition should not be bought on the assumption that any external drive will solve the problem. Sony’s drive setup guide.
Check your display too. Keep a screen you already like while you decide whether anything about it bothers you. Our GTA 6 TV and monitor guide covers that purchase. Treat the two upgrades separately.
Before paying, save the exact console model, the basket total and the return deadline. If the purchase only makes sense with a particular GTA 6 performance mode, wait until that mode is documented.
