Quick answer

Check your console’s free space before buying storage for GTA 6. Clear games you can spare, then decide whether you need an archive or more space for games ready to play. Use the library worksheet before choosing a PS5 M.2 SSD or Xbox Storage Expansion Card.

Check the storage screen before shopping for a GTA 6 drive. Start there. Spend on expansion only after deciding which games need to stay installed, how often moving the others is acceptable, and whether the same crowded library will become a problem again a month after launch.

Rockstar lists GTA 6 for November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Official GTA 6 page. If you still need the console itself, start with our GTA 6 console buying guide; storage is a separate decision.

Plan for the download, leave the size blank

Digital preorders can begin preloading on November 12, when the boxed version, which contains a download code, is also scheduled to become available to support preloading. Play is scheduled to begin November 19. Preloading is not playable early access. Take-Two’s preorder announcement.

Buying the box therefore does not remove download planning from your checklist. Set aside time before launch to deal with the installation. There is no useful reason to turn an unconfirmed file-size claim into an SSD purchase today. Leave that field blank until your console’s store provides the requirement.

Audit the games you intend to keep

Record the free space on the storage location where you intend to install GTA 6. On PS5, Settings > Storage shows the available space, and game installations can be managed separately from saved data. Sony’s storage guide.

Target the installations you no longer need; keep saved progress out of your cleanup plan.

Write down the games you expect to play during launch week, including someone else’s favorites if you share the console. A game you have finished belongs on a different list from the multiplayer game your household opens every night. Start with one easy removal, check the space again, and stop clearing the library when it matches what the household uses instead of chasing an arbitrary round number. Ask before deleting somebody else’s installation.

Choose between an archive and games ready to play

Your situationSensible next step
Plenty of removable installationsClear space, then reassess when GTA 6’s requirement is available
Games you want to keep locally but rarely launchConsider compatible USB storage as an archive
A PS5 library you want immediately playableCompare compatible internal M.2 SSDs
An Xbox Series X|S library you want immediately playableCompare compatible Storage Expansion Cards

Sony allows PS5 games to be stored on USB extended storage, but they cannot run there. PS4 games can run directly from it. Sony’s USB guidance. On Xbox, USB can archive newer games, while a compatible expansion card provides storage from which Series X|S games can run. Microsoft’s storage explanation.

An archive suits a patient library keeper. Buy playable expansion when you want to select a game and start it without first reorganizing storage. For a small active library, clearing space and keeping the money is the better choice. A shared console changes the calculation: if one person wants a long single-player session while another expects to jump back into their regular multiplayer game later that evening, keeping both installations available solves a real household problem without anyone having to justify their game to the person managing the drive. Price that convenience against the total cost of expansion.

Build a storage budget without guessing GTA 6’s size

Use the figures shown by your console. This worksheet is a planning tool; its example is hypothetical and predicts nothing about GTA 6.

SymbolWhat you enter
FFree space on the intended installation drive
RSpace recovered by removing or relocating games from that drive
HSpare room you personally choose to leave unused
GGTA 6’s confirmed installation requirement for your console, when available

Your installation budget is F + R − H. Once G is known, subtract it. A negative result means you need to free more space or reconsider where the game will live.

For example, suppose your console shows 90GB free. Two games you are happy to remove total 110GB, and you choose a 40GB reserve. The calculation is 90 + 110 − 40 = 160GB available for a new installation. That 160GB describes this invented library. It says nothing about GTA 6’s size. The 40GB reserve is also an example choice, rather than a platform requirement or a promised update allowance.

Repeat the exercise with the games you refuse to remove. Use that second pass to set a spending limit, because it ties the purchase to the library you want available throughout the year instead of letting excitement about one release decide how much storage you buy.

PS5: buy capacity and the correct cooling assembly

Sony specifies a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe drive with 250GB–8TB capacity and effective cooling within its stated dimensions; its sequential read figure of 5,500MB/s or faster is a recommendation, rather than a mandatory minimum. M.2 SATA drives are unsupported. Follow Sony’s instructions for your console model. PS5 M.2 requirements.

Compare the complete purchase. A bare SSD and a version with a suitable heatsink are different propositions. An assembly whose fit is clearly documented beats a vague listing with a more impressive headline speed.

Our Samsung 990 PRO review and WD_BLACK SN850X review provide the next comparison. Already considering an older model? Read the Samsung 980 PRO review before replacing it. Check the exact capacity and cooling version you plan to order.

A first-time PS5 M.2 installation requires formatting, which erases existing data on that SSD. Sony also requires each game’s data to stay on one storage location. Sony installation guidance.

Avoid treating separate pockets of free space as one combined installation budget.

Xbox: check the connector before the capacity

Xbox Storage Expansion Cards use the console’s dedicated expansion port. Microsoft’s primer distinguishes these cards from USB HDDs and SSDs, which serve a different role for games requiring Series X|S storage performance. Both Series X and Series S have the expansion port. Xbox Wire storage primer.

Check the listing carefully. For a larger collection of current games ready to launch, choose a compatible expansion card; for a shelf of games between playthroughs, price an archive separately and decide whether you are willing to move installations when your plans change. Reject any listing that leaves the storage type unclear.

Make the purchase solve the right problem

A single-game player should wait for the installation requirement and clear room first. A household that keeps switching games has a stronger case for expansion. Someone who already owns suitable archive storage should try reorganizing the library before ordering another drive.

Keep the display budget separate too. Our GTA 6 TV and monitor guide tackles that choice. Neither purchase belongs on the list merely because the release is close.

Before the preload window, revisit the console’s free-space reading and the game’s current store listing. Replace the worksheet’s blank G with the published requirement before deciding what to delete or buy.

Frequently asked questions

How much storage does GTA 6 need?
The official GTA 6 page and preorder announcement checked on October 8 do not specify an installation size. Use the requirement shown for your console when available.
Can I play PS5 games from a USB SSD?
No. USB extended storage can hold PS5 games, but they must return to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD for play. PlayStation storage guidance.
Does a PS5 SSD need a heatsink?
Sony requires effective heat dissipation and a cooling assembly that fits its dimensions. Its 5,500MB/s read figure is a recommendation. Sony M.2 requirements.
Is Xbox USB storage the same as a Storage Expansion Card?
No. A compatible expansion card supports playing Series X|S games directly; USB storage can archive games that require the console’s faster storage. Xbox storage primer.
