Quick answer

Buy the RTX 5060 only for 1080p, and only when the budget stops exactly there. At Newegg on October 7, 2026 the cheapest new card cost $459.99, about 54 percent over the $299 launch price, while an RX 9060 XT 16GB cost $519.99 and TechSpot’s MSRP comparison put that card nearly 30 percent faster with twice the VRAM.

The RTX 5060 is a good 1080p graphics card sold at the wrong price. At Newegg on October 7, 2026 the cheapest new RTX 5060 cost $459.99, about 54 percent over the $299 launch price TechSpot printed (derived). Sixty dollars more bought an RX 9060 XT 16GB with twice the memory. The score is 3.0 out of 5 at October 2026 street prices.

The reservation is memory. Eight gigabytes is the only configuration NVIDIA lists, and at 1440p in current games it runs out. The silicon did not get worse. The market did.

This review evaluates the RTX 5060 using the manufacturer’s documentation and the independent tests cited below; it adds no new TechFuelHQ lab measurements. I have not tested an RTX 5060.

The version and fit to check

NVIDIA’s RTX 5060 family page prints the reference figures below. Every RTX 5060 is a board-partner card.

Length belongs to the board. TechPowerUp measured the Zotac Solo at 16.5 by 11.5 cm and two slots, with one fan and no backplate, which makes it the ITX pick. The MSI Gaming OC is a 25 cm dual-slot card that TechPowerUp says “will fit into all cases, even older ones”. No cited review tested the Gigabyte Windforce OC behind the buttons above, so measure your case against Gigabyte’s listing.

The slot matters too. TechPowerUp calls the x8 link “generally not an issue”, while TechSpot warns it “becomes a major issue for those on older hardware, especially when restricted to PCIe 3.0”, because a card that overflows its VRAM leans on that link.

How fast it is

NVIDIA launched the card on May 19, 2025. Windows Central reported in advance that NVIDIA would not give the press early drivers and that many major reviewers would already be at Computex, which opened May 20. TechSpot benchmarked it in a hotel room at the show and called the launch “a PR disaster”; GamersNexus bought its own cards.

The results agree anyway. TechPowerUp’s 24-game suite (May 27, 2025; 1080p, no ray tracing or upscaling) puts the RTX 5060 level with the RTX 4060 Ti, 26 percent ahead of the RTX 4060 and about 25 percent ahead of the Arc B580, while the RTX 5060 Ti on the same chip runs 15 percent faster. In its MSI review (July 14, 2025) TechPowerUp found the RX 9060 XT “a bit faster” in both its 8GB and 16GB versions.

TechSpot’s 18 games (May 22, 2025; Ryzen 7 9800X3D) land in the same place. At 1080p the 5060 matched the RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 3070, trailed the RX 7700 XT by 6 percent and beat the RTX 4060 by 22 percent. GamersNexus (overclocked Core i7-12700KF) measured the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB 15 to 25 percent faster and called the 5060 “about the same as a 3070”.

That is a 2020 RTX 3070 tier at a 2026 price. The GPU hierarchy places it, and the GPU comparison tool lines it up against the card you own.

Where 8GB runs out

TechPowerUp is blunt: “1080p is really the only resolution that you should consider the RTX 5060 for.” TechSpot’s 1440p runs show why. Stalker 2 averaged 6 fps. Oblivion Remastered averaged 34 fps with 18 fps 1% lows, and The Last of Us Part I “fell apart” with ultra quality. In some games the frame rate looked fine while textures were missing.

Even 1080p has limits. With ray tracing and the highest textures, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle “will even crash during level loading” in TechPowerUp’s testing, and the reviewer recommends targeting 7GB of VRAM use there. TechPowerUp also saw some games run slower than on the RTX 4060 8GB at higher resolutions.

The penalty is measurable on a sibling card. TechSpot’s RX 9060 XT 8GB review found the 16GB version 17 to 184 percent faster at 1440p with FSR once 8GB was exceeded, and advised buyers to “avoid the 8GB versions of the 5060 Ti and 9060 XT”.

Esports is the exception. TechSpot measured 370 fps in Counter-Strike 2 at 1440p, slightly ahead of the RX 7700 XT.

Ray tracing and DLSS 4

Alan Wake II at 1080p with DLSS Quality averaged 36 fps in TechSpot’s test, 20 percent ahead of the RTX 4060. TechSpot’s verdict is that 8GB “is insufficient for ray tracing in modern titles”.

Frame generation helps less than the marketing suggests. TechPowerUp found it adds about 1GB of VRAM use and needs a base of roughly 40 to 50 fps before the added latency stops being noticeable. In Alan Wake 2, x2 gave the best experience while x3 and x4 added too much latency, and in Dragon Age: The Veilguard the reviewer turned it off to keep memory for textures. Tom’s Hardware agrees that 8GB “isn’t enough to consistently enable framegen in the titles where you’d really want it”.

TechPowerUp notes the Arc B580 lacks the DLSS Transformer model. I would treat DLSS upscaling as the reason to pick this card over the B580, and frame generation as a bonus for games already near 50 fps.

Power, thermals and noise

NVIDIA rates the RTX 5060 at 145 W and asks for a 550 W system supply. TechPowerUp’s power page measures card-only draw and sets its minimum PSU at 350 W, and the Zotac review says the card “will run fine in any older PC, without PSU upgrade, as long as you have a 6+2 or 8-pin PCIe power cable”. The PSU wattage calculator checks the rest of your system.

Board limits differ. The MSI Gaming OC raises the default to 155 W with a 170 W maximum; the Zotac Solo allows no increase.

Both coolers stay far under 89 °C. TechPowerUp’s noise table (microphone at 50 cm) lists the MSI Gaming OC at 65 °C and 29.2 dBA under load, with fans stopped at idle. The single-fan Zotac Solo ran 70 °C at 32.0 dBA and has no idle fan-stop.

Price and the alternatives

At its $299 launch price TechSpot worked out $5.35 per frame, and TechPowerUp called $300 “the best of the whole market”. At $330, TechSpot already declined: “it’s not a product we can recommend at that price.” GamersNexus answered “No”.

Then prices rose. TechSpot’s August 31, 2026 survey put the cheapest US cards around $450, 51 percent above MSRP, and tied the rise to memory pricing. Tom’s Hardware’s tracker, updated September 28, 2026, lists a $449 best US price against a $279 lowest ever, with $499 and $779 for the RTX 5060 Ti 8GB and 16GB. The site’s GPU price index follows the same drift.

On October 7, 2026 Newegg’s lowest-price sort showed three new RTX 5060s at $459.99 and refurbished cards from $409.99. The Gigabyte Windforce OC behind the buttons listed at $499.99. The neighbours that day:

CardCheapest new at Newegg, October 7, 2026Against the RTX 5060
Arc B580 12GB$329.99About 20 percent slower at 1080p (derived; TechPowerUp puts the RTX 5060 about 25 percent ahead)
RTX 5060 Ti 8GB$499.0015 percent faster, same 8GB (TechPowerUp)
RX 9060 XT 8GB$499.99“A bit faster” (TechPowerUp)
RX 9060 XT 16GB$519.99Nearly 30 percent faster at MSRP (TechSpot)
RTX 5060 Ti 16GB$799.9915 to 25 percent faster (GamersNexus)

The RX 9060 XT 16GB decides the score. TechSpot’s review of it said it “makes the RTX 5060 largely irrelevant”, with nearly 30 percent more performance and twice the VRAM for $50 more at MSRP. On October 7 the gap was $60. It also draws more power: TechSpot measured it 21 to 27 W above the RTX 5060 Ti at the system level, and NVIDIA rates the 5060 Ti 35 W higher than the RTX 5060 (180 W against 145 W). The RTX 5060 Ti vs RX 9060 XT showdown covers that tier.

The counterpoint is real. Tom’s Hardware’s best-GPU guide, updated October 2, 2026, still names the RTX 5060 the best card for 1080p, and TechPowerUp’s launch verdict was positive. Those keep it out of the avoid band.

The rubric reason for 3.0 is plain. At $459.99 the RTX 5060 is hard to recommend, because $60 more buys a faster card with twice the memory and 8GB already fails at 1440p.

Who should buy it

  • You play at 1080p, mostly esports or older games, and want DLSS 4 upscaling for less than an RTX 5060 Ti costs.
  • Your PSU has one 6+2-pin or 8-pin cable and you will not replace it.
  • You need a short card; the Zotac Solo is 16.5 cm.
  • The budget cannot stretch $60, and you accept lower texture settings.

Who should skip it

  • You game at 1440p or plan to. TechSpot’s 6 fps in Stalker 2 is the warning.
  • You want ultra textures or ray tracing in 2025 and 2026 releases.
  • You can spend $60 more on the RX 9060 XT 16GB.
  • You already own an RTX 3070 or RTX 4060 Ti class card. TechSpot and GamersNexus put the 5060 level with that tier.

A buyer who can stretch further should see the $1,500 RTX 5060 Ti 1440p build for what the next tier needs around it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the RTX 5060 good for 1440p gaming?
Not for current big-budget games. TechSpot’s 18-game test measured 6 fps in Stalker 2 and 18 fps 1% lows in Oblivion Remastered at 1440p because the 8GB buffer overflows, and TechPowerUp wrote that 1080p is the only resolution to consider it for. Esports and older titles are fine; Counter-Strike 2 averaged 370 fps at 1440p in TechSpot’s test. For 1440p in new releases, step up to a 16GB card.
RTX 5060 or RX 9060 XT: which should I buy in 2026?
The RX 9060 XT 16GB for most buyers. TechSpot’s MSRP comparison put it nearly 30 percent ahead of the RTX 5060 with twice the VRAM, and TechPowerUp measured both the 8GB and 16GB 9060 XT ahead of the 5060. At Newegg on October 7, 2026 the cheapest new RTX 5060 cost $459.99 and the cheapest RX 9060 XT 16GB $519.99. The RTX 5060 wins only when you specifically want DLSS 4 or cannot stretch that $60.
How much faster is the RTX 5060 Ti than the RTX 5060?
About 15 percent at 1080p in TechPowerUp’s suite, and 15 to 25 percent across 1080p, 1440p and 4K in GamersNexus’s testing of the 16GB Ti. Both cards use the same GB206 chip; the 5060 has 17 percent fewer cores. The gap that matters is memory, because the 16GB Ti keeps running at 1440p where the 8GB 5060 stalls. On October 7, 2026 the 16GB Ti listed from $799.99 at Newegg against $459.99 for the 5060.
What power supply does the RTX 5060 need?
NVIDIA rates the card at 145 W total graphics power with a 550 W required system power and a single PCIe 8-pin connector, or a 300 W or greater Gen 5 cable with the adapter in the box. TechPowerUp’s guidance is lower, a 350 W minimum PSU, and it says the card runs fine in older PCs without a PSU upgrade as long as a 6+2 or 8-pin cable is present. MSI’s Gaming OC raises the limit to 155 W by default.
Does DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation fix the RTX 5060’s 8GB problem?
No, it uses some of that memory. TechPowerUp found frame generation adds about 1GB of VRAM use and needs a base of 40 to 50 fps before the added latency is tolerable; x2 gave the best experience in Alan Wake 2 while x3 and x4 added too much latency. In Dragon Age: The Veilguard the reviewer turned it off to leave memory for textures. TechPowerUp’s fix in VRAM-limited games is lower texture settings, aiming for about 7GB of use in Indiana Jones.
