Start here: do you even need to transcode?
Almost every “best NAS for Plex” guide skips the one question that should drive the whole purchase, so let’s put it first. A media server does the least work when it Direct Plays — hands the file to your player untouched. The server’s effort climbs from there: Direct Play → Remux (swap the container) → Direct Stream (convert audio only) → Transcode (rebuild the video), per Jellyfin’s transcoding docs. Transcoding is the expensive one, and it’s a fallback — it only happens when the client can’t play the file as-is.
There are really only three triggers: an unsupported codec or container on the client, a bandwidth/bitrate cap (usually remote streaming), or subtitle burn-in — and note that image-based subtitles like PGS or VOBSUB force a full video transcode even when the video itself was fine. A modern player — Apple TV 4K, an NVIDIA Shield, a Fire TV Stick 4K Max — direct-plays most H.264 and HEVC natively, which means a lot of home setups rarely transcode at all. If that’s you, an ARM NAS is a perfectly good storage box.
So the honest buying rule is: match your player to your files first, then buy exactly as much transcode headroom as the cases you can’t avoid demand. The one case that will force your hand is 4K HDR tone-mapping (playing 4K HDR content on an SDR target). Jellyfin’s own hardware-selection guide is blunt about it: tone-mapping 4K60 Dolby Vision to H.264 SDR “requires a Ryzen 9 5950X for faster than real-time” in software, so “a GPU is ALWAYS recommended.” That single workload is why hardware transcoding — and therefore the CPU inside your NAS — is the spec that matters.
The one rule: Intel Quick Sync (and what it rules out in 2026)
Hardware transcoding on a NAS almost always means Intel Quick Sync, the video engine baked into Intel’s integrated graphics. It lets a low-power chip transcode several streams while the CPU stays near idle. The practical compatibility line is simple:
- Intel with an iGPU (Quick Sync) → yes. N100, N150, N95, N5105, J4125, J6412, Pentium Gold 8505, Core i3-N305, Core i5-1235U, and friends.
- ARM / Realtek → no. No Quick Sync at all; these choke after roughly one software-transcoded stream. Fine for storage and Direct Play only.
- AMD without an iGPU → no. Some embedded Ryzen parts (see Synology below) have no integrated graphics, so every transcode falls back to the CPU.
- AMD with a Radeon iGPU → it depends. Parts like the Ryzen Embedded R2514 (Radeon Vega 8) can hardware-transcode through VAAPI, which Jellyfin handles well but Plex supports inconsistently.
Which brings us to the trap that makes this guide necessary.
The 2026 Synology transcode trap
For a decade the default answer to “best NAS for Plex” was “a Synology.” In 2026 that answer is usually wrong, and almost no competing guide explains why — because it broke in two different ways at once.
Prong one — the AMD models have no iGPU. Synology’s 2025 Plus units moved to AMD Ryzen embedded chips with no integrated graphics. The DS925+ and DS1525+ use the Ryzen V1500B; the DS923+, DS723+ and DS725+ use the R1600. Reviewers put it plainly — the V1500B “does not have an embedded GPU… you will be unable to use the Plex hardware acceleration functionality.” Every transcode on these boxes is software-only, which a 40+ Mbps 10-bit 4K HEVC stream will not survive gracefully.
Prong two — the Intel models had their driver removed. The 2025 DS225+ and DS425+ still ship the same Intel Celeron J4125 with Quick Sync silicon as older units — but Synology stripped the i915 iGPU kernel driver out of DSM on the 25-series, disabling hardware H.264/HEVC transcoding at the software level. Synology’s own statement, quoted in a widely-shared Channels community PSA, is that “starting with products released in 2025 and beyond, even if the CPU supports hardware transcoding, we will no longer provide the driver required to enable it,” citing HEVC licensing. Threads on SynoForum document the same removal. The lone 2025 exception is the BeeStation Plus, for which Synology paid the codec licenses. A community SSH workaround exists to re-inject the driver on a DS225+/DS425+, but it’s unsupported and reapplies itself after every reboot or DSM update — a curiosity, not a reason to buy.
The result is a genuine consumer trap: the DS225+ is even marketed on Amazon with the title “Intel CPU for Hardware Transcoding,” which is true about the silicon and false about what DSM will actually let Plex or Jellyfin do. So: do not buy a current Synology as an out-of-box media transcoder. The DS225+ (~$360), DS425+ (~$545) and DS925+ (~$695) are fine NAS units for many jobs — hardware media transcoding is not one of them in 2026. (Older 24-series Intel boxes like the DS224+/DS423+ still transcode via Quick Sync, but the diskless SKUs are effectively gone from Amazon’s first-party listings and are being phased out — don’t build a 2026 purchase around finding one new.)

Best budget, 2-bay: UGREEN NASync DXP2800
An Intel N100 (quad-core Alder Lake-N with UHD Quick Sync), 8GB DDR5, 2.5GbE, and two M.2 slots — the cheapest appliance on this list with working hardware transcoding. The N100’s Quick Sync engine comfortably handles multiple 1080p transcodes and a 4K→1080p stream or two, all while the CPU barely registers. It ran ~$390 diskless (to ~$440) in our 2026-07-19 Amazon snapshot, with over a thousand reviews (Amazon). This is the box to buy instead of the Synology DS225+.
Best mainstream, 4-bay: UGREEN NASync DXP4800 Plus
The center of gravity for most media libraries. An Intel Pentium Gold 8505 (five-core Alder Lake with UHD Quick Sync), 8GB DDR5, a 128GB system SSD, and — unusually at this price — 10GbE plus 2.5GbE. Four bays give you room to grow, and the Quick Sync engine handles several simultaneous transcodes including 4K. It was ~$657 diskless (a variant to ~$730) with 640+ reviews on 2026-07-19 (Amazon). One caution: UGREEN sells a near-identically-named DXP4800 GT at almost the same price that uses an AMD Ryzen R2514 (Radeon Vega 8) — it transcodes through VAAPI on Jellyfin but is inconsistent on Plex, so if Plex is your app, pin the “Plus” SKU, not the GT.
Best for heavy 4K / many streams: TerraMaster F4-424 Pro
When you’re tone-mapping 4K HDR or feeding several transcoding clients at once, step up to an Intel Core i3-N305 — eight cores with a 32-EU UHD iGPU — paired with 32GB of DDR5 and dual 2.5GbE. TerraMaster’s spec page lists hardware transcoding for H.264/H.265/MPEG-4/VC-1 up to 4K, and the listing’s own comparison marks 4K hardware transcoding as supported. It was ~$688 diskless (to ~$860 on a variant) on 2026-07-19 (Amazon). If you want the same Quick Sync capability for less and can live with a plainer chassis, the TerraMaster F4-425 (Intel quad-core, 4K H.265 hardware decode, ~$365) is a strong value 4-bay.
Best value: a mini-PC + separate storage
The pick that most guides won’t tell you about, because it isn’t a NAS. An Intel N100 or N150 mini-PC has the exact same Quick Sync engine as the appliances above, costs $130-300, draws around 10W, and — because it isn’t simultaneously running a disk array — out-transcodes most sub-$700 NAS boxes. The homelab-standard setup is to keep bulk media on a cheaper NAS or DAS and run Plex or Jellyfin on the mini-PC over the network. It’s more moving parts and a little more setup, but it decouples transcode compute from your disks and is the most transcode-per-dollar you can buy. Plex vs Jellyfin: the transcode cost gap got wider in 2026

Plex gates hardware transcoding behind a paid Plex Pass, and that price moved sharply this year: as of July 1, 2026 the lifetime Plex Pass jumped to $749.99 from $249.99, with monthly ($6.99) and annual ($69.99) unchanged and a new 5-year plan at $249.99 — confirmed by Plex’s own pricing announcement and widely reported. Jellyfin does the same hardware transcoding for free, with no premium tier, per its hardware-acceleration docs.
