The WD Red Plus line is purpose-built for exactly this: WD’s own product brief positions it “for RAID-optimized NAS systems with up to 8 bays.” It spans 2TB to 12TB and is all-CMR at every capacity per the WD Red Plus data sheet (Sep 2025). The core spec across the line: 180TB/year workload rate, 1,000,000-hour MTBF, and a 3-year limited warranty. RPM varies by model — the current 12TB and 10TB SKUs are 7200 RPM, while the 8TB and below run 5400/5640 RPM, which keeps the smaller drives quieter and cooler for a home shelf or closet. (Note: the specific 12TB row we priced below is the older WD120EFAX, which is the 5400-RPM variant — the current 7200-RPM 12TB is the newer WD120EFBX. Both are CMR.)

Seagate IronWolf Pro is an all-CMR portfolio; Seagate states plainly that “all IronWolf Pro drives utilize conventional magnetic recording (CMR) technology.” The current top capacities reach 30TB and 28TB, rated for a 550TB/year workload, 2,500,000-hour MTBF, 7200 RPM, and a 5-year limited warranty, per the IronWolf Pro data sheet. Its signature extra is 3 years of complimentary Rescue Data Recovery Services bundled in — a real safety net if a drive dies with data you never backed up (though you should back up anyway).

WD Red Pro matches the mission: all-CMR from 2TB up to 26TB, 550TB/year workload, 7200 RPM across the whole line, and a 5-year limited warranty, per the WD Red Pro data sheet (Jan 2025). Two honest caveats from our own price pull, both covered in the table below: (1) among new drives, bigger did not mean cheaper per-TB — the new 12TB WD Red Plus ($48.53/TB) was pricier per terabyte than the new 8TB ($42.50/TB); and (2) the outright value champion was a recertified 16TB IronWolf Pro at $31.25/TB. So for media bulk, shop the live $/TB at 8-16TB rather than assuming the biggest new drive is the best deal, and seriously consider recertified for the bulk tier. Best budget: a recertified big-capacity CMR drive (with eyes open)

The cheapest way to fill bays in 2026 is a recertified enterprise-class or NAS-Pro CMR drive. In our July 3 pull the recertified 16TB IronWolf Pro (ST16000NE000) was $499.99 = $31.25/TB, versus $640 = $40.00/TB for the same model listed as new — a ~22% discount and the lowest cost-per-terabyte in the entire comparison (recertified Amazon listing). (The $640 “new” anchor came from a third-party marketplace listing rather than a first-party pristine-new sale, so treat it as the same-model reference price, not a guaranteed factory-new quote.) The trade-offs are real and covered in the recertified section below: thinner warranty and thinner review counts. This is a value play for someone running redundancy and backups, not a set-and-forget pick.

For budget on a new drive, the standard-tier lines (base Seagate IronWolf, standard Toshiba N300) exist, but note Toshiba’s N300 8TB was actually the most expensive per-TB new drive in our pull at $55.59/TB — so “budget brand” does not always mean budget price at a given capacity. Shop the number, not the label.

CMR vs SMR — and the WD Red history you should know

This is the single most important technical distinction for a NAS drive, and it has a real cautionary tale attached.

CMR (conventional magnetic recording) writes data tracks side by side. SMR (shingled magnetic recording) overlaps tracks like roof shingles to pack in more areal density. The practical NAS problem is that SMR’s device-managed garbage collection and band-rewrite behavior can drastically slow random writes and RAID rebuilds — the worst possible time for a drive to crawl is while your array is rebuilding after a failure.

The reason NAS buyers learned to check this the hard way: around 2020, plain WD Red (non-Plus) “EFAX” drives were quietly SMR. The discount is real: across two clean same-model comparisons in our July 3 pull, recertified/renewed ran ~19-22% below new — the 8TB WD Red Plus at $275 renewed vs $339.99 new (~19%), and the 16TB IronWolf Pro at $499.99 recertified vs $640 new (~22%). Renewed/recertified listings showed up in every search we ran.

The warranty catch is also real. ServerPartDeals — a common recertified-drive seller — defines a “Manufacturer Recertified” drive in its FAQ as an item “tested, recertified, and approved by the original manufacturer… without a manufacturer warranty.” In other words, the original manufacturer warranty does not carry over. The coverage you actually get is the seller’s own, stated per product — one live recertified Exos listing shows a “2 Year Limited Period Warranty” plus a 30-day satisfaction return window. Warranty length is set per product, not by a single site-wide number, so read the specific listing.

Second signal to watch: review depth. The renewed 8TB WD Red Plus in our pull carried only 3 ratings versus 1,100 on the new version of the same model — a thin trust signal worth weighing.

Net: recertified is a smart value move if you run redundancy (RAID/RAIDZ so a single failure doesn’t lose data), keep a real 3-2-1 backup, and accept a seller warranty in place of the manufacturer’s. It is not the pick for someone running a single drive with no backup.
